BarCamp Kerala 11 at IIM-K – A Memoir

Arun Basil Lal · November 21st, 2011 · Memoir

The 11th edition of BarCamp was announced with just 20 days of notice, unlike other editions. Hence the registered sessions and attendees was lower than the norm. And this time it was at Indian Institute of Management, Calicut. I don’t know why, but people find travelling to the north a bit more hectic than travelling to Trivandrum.

The day started as early as 4 in the morning for me with @theAnand, @BinnyVA and @jluSujith travelling in Anand’s car, cruising at speeds close to 90 kmph, thanks to the empty early morning roads. We had breakfast on the way and reached the campus at 9:30. As expected, @praseed3point14 was already at the venue.

From Indonesia with Love

Arun Basil Lal · November 14th, 2011 · Memoir

The title might give you a sense that I am writing this from Indonesia, but no, its been a while (actually a long while, getting back to life after the vacation took much more than I thought) since I came back home. Now that gives you the idea that I have been to Indonesia.

Obvious Questions:

Why did you go?
Indonesian Flag in BaliWell, in Airport Customs Terms, Purpose of visit was a social visit. Meeting Friends and leisure. It was on my new year resolution this year to Get my Passport and to use it. I had been trying to get a Passport since I was 18, but each time I would give up since I had some complication in my address. But this time I did it!

Why Indonesia?
I don’t know if its me or them, but the friends I have from Indonesia seem to stick. I have made friends from various parts of the world, but most of them never stayed. Visiting Indonesia was in my Bucket List and hence it was my first choice. (Nah, you know I am lying ;)

And how long did you stay?
12 days. Reached Jakarta on 11th August. Visited Jakarta, Bali and Bandung. Returned from Jakarta on 23rd August.

Its been a while since I read my last book and this one, Outliers came heavily recommended. The book starts with a definition of what an Outlier is:

Out-li-er

  1. something that is situated away from our classed differently from a main or related body.
  2. a statistical observation that is markedly different in value from the others of the sample.

Looking back!

Arun Basil Lal · June 3rd, 2011 · Memoir

Today, its the completion of an year of leaving college. Looking back, I had a great year!

The greatest of all would be living away from home. I never had to stay away from home for a considerably long time during school or college days, but soon after college I moved to Cochin. Stayed at two places so far, so far so good.

Day out in Trivandrum!

Arun Basil Lal · May 29th, 2011 · Memoir

When I was in school, I rarely went for the field trips. I hated it those days. One of the locations of choice during those days was Trivandrum, the capital city of my state (kerala).

Somehow, I wanted to see the city. I have had many chances to go there, but it never happened, so when I had to go there for some paper-work for my start-up, I made it a point to go out and see the city.
